Is Screen Time Bad or Just Misunderstood? A Balanced Look for Mindful Parents

September 6, 2025 No Comments
Screen time

Welcome. I’d like to start by saying that I don’t think I’m alone when it comes to this subject. That mix of guilt, worry, and even frustration when it comes to screen time is something I hear from almost every parent I know. “I feel bad for letting my child use screens, but I’m so […]

It’s easy to think nothing’s happening when it’s q It’s easy to think nothing’s happening when it’s quiet.

No big reactions. No excitement. No obvious “learning”.

Just your child sitting there… doing something simple.

But that’s usually where the real stuff is happening.

Focus. Problem solving. Repeating things. Figuring things out in their own time.

I’ve noticed it with mine — the loud, busy moments feel like progress… but the calm ones are where they actually stick with something.

That’s why I’ve started paying more attention to what’s not noisy.

Less pressure. Less rushing in. Just letting them get on with it.

That’s where you start to see it properly.

Most of the time it’s not that they’re bored… It’ Most of the time it’s not that they’re bored…

It’s that there’s too much out.

Too many options. Too much noise. Nothing really holding their attention.

I used to think I needed more toys.

But the more we had out, the worse it got.

They’d pick something up, drop it, move on… over and over again.

No focus. No real play.

What’s worked better for us is just pulling it back.

Less out. More space. One or two things that are actually easy to start with.

And weirdly… that’s when the longer play starts happening.

Not perfect. But definitely better.

Play doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have Play doesn’t have to be perfect.

It doesn’t have to look like something you saw online.

And it definitely doesn’t have to be complicated to be “good” for them.

Most of the time, the simplest things are what they actually stick with.

Less pressure. Less overthinking. Just letting them play.

Ever cooked something that your child had no inter Ever cooked something that your child had no interest in even trying?
We hit that stage and honestly, it just got frustrating.
You don’t want to force it, but you also don’t want them living off the same 3 foods forever.

This is what we started doing instead.

We made it a bit of a game.

Pick one food together.
No pressure to eat it. Just interact with it.
Even looking, touching or licking counts.

Then they earn points for trying.
And you track it so they can actually see their progress.

It sounds simple, but it completely changed the vibe at home.
Less pressure, less battles… more willingness to try.

That’s where the Brave Bite Challenge came from.

If you’re dealing with a picky eater, it might help.
It’s on our Etsy — link in bio.

It’s not when I show them something that it clicks It’s not when I show them something that it clicks.

It’s when they try it themselves.

Even if it’s messy, slow, or doesn’t quite work the first time — that’s where the confidence actually builds.

Not from getting it right… just from having a go.

Feels like such a small thing, but it changes how I look at play completely.

Just launched these on Etsy today. We made these Just launched these on Etsy today.

We made these because we wanted something calm and actually useful on the wall — not just decoration, but little prompts for everyday learning through play.

Days, colours, animals, feelings, numbers… all the basics in a way that doesn’t feel loud or overwhelming.

If you’ve got a toddler at home, you’ll know how often they point at things and ask questions — this just makes those moments a bit easier.

They’re printable, so you can use them straight away and pick the sizes you need.

Link’s in the bio if you want to take a look.

Some days I catch myself worrying about whether my Some days I catch myself worrying about whether my kids are “learning enough”… then I watch them play and realise they’re learning everything.

Focus isn’t something you sit down and teach like a lesson. It builds slowly, through real play, real curiosity, and just letting them get lost in what they’re doing.

Less pressure, more play… and it actually works better.

This one is all about moon phases — and I love it This one is all about moon phases — and I love it because it turns something that feels quite “big” and science-y into something your child can actually see and explore for themselves.

You don’t need loads for this kind of learning.
A torch, a ball, a dark room, and a bit of curiosity is more than enough.

Not overcomplicated setups, just simple little moments that spark questions and help things click naturally.

And honestly, those are usually the bits they remember most.

If your little one is into space at the moment, this is such a nice one to try at home 🤍

Save this for later if you want an easy calm activity with a bit of wonder built in ✨

Kids don’t need us to constantly entertain them or Kids don’t need us to constantly entertain them or fill every second.
Most of the time they just need the right space, a bit of calm, and the chance to figure things out in their own way.

That’s a big part of what I like about Montessori really.
Less pressure. Less chaos. More trust.

Definitely something I’m still learning as a parent too.

Some of the best learning moments in our homes don Some of the best learning moments in our homes don’t look impressive at all.

They look like random questions, messy play, repeating the same thing 20 times, lining toys up, making “potions”, chatting to themselves, or getting fully stuck into something that seems really small to us.

It’s easy to think learning has to look structured to “count” — but honestly, so much of it happens in the ordinary bits of the day.

A lot of the time, if they’re curious, focused, trying, exploring or repeating… they’re learning. 🤎

If you need something easy to keep them busy over If you need something easy to keep them busy over Easter… this has actually worked really well in our house.

Just simple activities they can sit with for a bit — tracing, colouring, little puzzles. Nothing fancy, but it keeps them focused without screens for a while.

I made these to be low effort for you but still feel like proper learning through play.

I didn’t really think much about independent play I didn’t really think much about independent play before.

I used to feel like I needed to be involved all the time… setting things up, guiding it, making sure it was “right”.

But actually, the more I step back, the better it gets.

They figure things out on their own.
They stick with things longer.
And you can see their confidence build without you doing much at all.

It’s not about leaving them to it completely… just giving them the space to try.

I always thought I had to properly teach seasons. I always thought I had to properly teach seasons.

Like sit down and explain it so they understood it.

But they don’t need that at all.

They just get it from being outside.

Cold days, wet days, leaves everywhere, lighter evenings…
they notice all of it without you even realising.

Now I just point things out here and there
and that’s pretty much it.

Way easier… and it actually sticks.

It’s easy to think learning has to look like sitti It’s easy to think learning has to look like sitting down and being taught something.

But most of it actually happens in the small, everyday moments… when they’re playing, exploring, and figuring things out for themselves.

When they’re focused on something they enjoy, that’s when the real learning sticks.

That’s why I’ve been trying to lean more into simple, calm play at home instead of always feeling like I need to “teach” something.

Being a mum is one of those things that never real Being a mum is one of those things that never really gets a day off.

It’s the snacks, the bedtime stories, the questions that never end, the cuddles, the chaos, and the quiet little moments in between.

As parents we’re just figuring it out as we go… trying to raise kind, curious, happy little humans.

So today is just a small reminder that all the effort, patience and love you pour into your children every day really does matter.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums out there 💛

Sometimes when a child is really absorbed in play Sometimes when a child is really absorbed in play it can look like they’re “just playing”.

But in those moments their brain is working hard — figuring things out, testing ideas, building focus and confidence.

It’s easy to underestimate how much learning is happening when a child is simply left to explore.

Those quiet play moments are often the most powerful ones.

I made these Montessori-inspired wall posters beca I made these Montessori-inspired wall posters because I wanted something simple on the wall that actually helps learning through play.

Things like numbers, shapes, letters and maths symbols are around children all the time, so I thought it would be nice if they could quietly absorb some of it just by seeing it every day.

Nothing complicated, just calm visual reminders that slowly build familiarity.

If you’d like them, they’re free to download on the website.

Quiet play doesn’t always look like much from the Quiet play doesn’t always look like much from the outside.

Sometimes it’s just a child sitting on the floor lining things up, repeating the same puzzle, building something and knocking it down again.

But in those quiet moments they’re practising focus, patience, problem solving and independence.

Those small moments of concentration build over time. And before you know it, the child who loved those quiet play moments becomes the one who can sit, focus and learn with confidence.

Play really does lay the foundations for so much more.

Clapping games, lining up toys and even bedtime ro Clapping games, lining up toys and even bedtime routines — kids start noticing what comes next without us really teaching it.

That’s actually a big part of early maths.

When children recognise patterns, they’re learning how to predict, organise information and make sense of what they see. Those are the same thinking skills they later use for maths, problem solving and logic.

The nice thing is you don’t need anything special to practise it.

You can make simple patterns with toys, snacks, socks, leaves in the garden… pretty much anything you have around the house.

It’s one of those small play moments that quietly builds real learning.
