What Are Activity Trays?

activity trays

Activity trays are a simple Montessori-inspired way of setting up play or learning activities so your child can use them independently. Each tray contains one activity, with all the materials needed in one place, laid out clearly and neatly.

The purpose of an activity tray isn’t to make things look perfect — it’s to make things easy for your child to start, understand, and finish without needing constant help.

Activity trays support independence, focus, and calmer play because everything has a clear place and a clear purpose.

Why Activity Trays Matter

1. They reduce overwhelm

Children can see exactly what the activity involves, without a pile of mixed toys or materials creating confusion.

2. They support independence

When everything is organised in one tray, children can choose it, carry it, set it up, and tidy it away on their own.

3. They help with focus

One tray = one activity. This helps children stay with the task longer instead of bouncing between toys.

4. They make routines easier for parents

You don’t need to set up complicated invitations to play. A simple tray is enough.

5. They work in small spaces

Activity trays don’t require a playroom — a low shelf or kitchen cupboard works just as well.

Examples of Activity Trays

Activity trays can be incredibly simple. A few real examples parents use:

  • Sorting tray: a bowl of buttons + two cups
  • Counting tray: objects to count + number cards
  • Fine motor tray: tongs + pom-poms
  • Posting tray: a bowl + a small hole-cut box
  • Art tray: paper + crayons or a small whiteboard
  • Puzzle tray: a puzzle laid out neatly
  • Nature tray: leaves, stones, pinecones for exploring

The tray itself can be a wooden tray, a basket, or even a shallow box — anything that keeps materials together.

How to Use Activity Trays at Home

  • Keep trays visible and accessible on a low shelf
  • Offer 3–6 trays at a time
  • Rotate trays when interest fades
  • Keep each tray simple and uncluttered
  • Let your child choose what to work with
  • Model how to return the tray when finished
  • Avoid giving step-by-step instructions — let them explore

The key is clarity, not complexity.

Activity Trays and CoBéBé

Our Forest Friends set naturally works as an activity tray by itself.

The puzzle base, magnetic pieces, animal cards, and whiteboard can each be used as single activities:

  • a puzzle tray
  • a matching tray
  • a storytelling tray
  • a drawing tray

It’s a flexible resource designed to support calm, independent, Montessori-inspired play.
